Laura is a freelance photographer in Mexico for
various national and international publications
and has over the past few years of her life specialized
in documentary photography of rural schools, refugees,
migrant farm workers in the United States and
Canada and the temporary displaced after natural
disasters such as earthquakes.
Last
year she won two separate grants to document the
life and work of mirgant Mexican farm workers
in rural Canada -- one from a bilateral Mexican-Canadian
fund and another from Light Work, a non-profit
fund for photographers based in Syracruse, New
York state.
Past
honors include being invited to the master class
of the World Press Photo Foundation in Amsterdam
in 1997. Two years earlier, she won the first
prize for photography for the Mexican Teachers´
Union. In 1992, she won a year-long grant to be
in the program of documentary and photojournalism
with the International Center of Photography in
New York. Also, Laura is a past 1988 winner of
the photography prize of Mexico´s National
Institute of Anthropology and History.
